President Joe Biden made the damning comment that voter integrity laws taking place in some red states are the “most significant threat” to the U.S. since the Civil War. At a speech from the National Constitutional Center in Philadelphia on Tuesday, Biden said there is “an unfolding assault taking place in America today, an attempt to suppress and subvert the right to vote.”
Biden continued, “we’re facing the most significant test of our democracy since the Civil War.” He emphasized, “that’s not hyperbole, since the Civil War.” Speaking about many laws recently passed in Republican-controlled states such as Georgia and Texas, Biden added, “the Confederates, back then, never breached the Capitol as insurrectionists did on January the 6th.”
“I’m not saying this to alarm you; I’m saying this because you should be alarmed” he stated. These “alarming” voting requirements, which Biden has likened to the “21st Century Jim Crow assault” includes mandated photo identification for voters who request absentee ballots.
The Georgia law requires photo identification listed above, as well as limits the early-voting period for runoff elections, and prohibits outside groups from handing out food and beverages at polling places.
Texas just passed similar voting laws which includes a requirement for voters to write their driver’s license number or other identification number on absentee ballots. It also bans state officials from sending unsolicited mail-in ballots. Yup, sounds worse than the Civil War. And every single threat to America since.
Nonetheless, Biden believes the Cold War, World War I, World War II, Bin Laden, Al Qaeda, ISIS, a global pandemic, just to name a few things that have threatened the United States since the Civil War, are all ‘child’s play’ compared to asking a U.S. citizen to prove that they are in fact a legal citizen with photo identification in order to vote.
