Let’s see if the American liberal left will take on the gender discrimination and human rights behavior of China. China’s President Xi Jinping has called for a “national rejuvenation” meaning tighter Communist Party control over all aspects of life. The Communist Party control includes business, education, culture and religion.
The Associated Press reports “companies and the public are under increasing pressure to align with its vision for a more powerful China and healthier society.” As an example, “the party has reduced children’s access to online games and is trying to discourage what it sees as unhealthy attention to celebrities.”
Additionally, broadcasters must “resolutely put an end to sissy men and other abnormal esthetics,” the National Radio and TV Administration said. An insulting slang term was also used for effeminate men – “niang pao” which translates to “girlie guns.”
Broadcasters should also avoid “vulgar internet celebrities” and admiration of wealth. Instead, programs should “vigorously promote excellent Chinese traditional culture, revolutionary culture and advanced socialist culture.”
Broadcasters are also to avoid performers who “violate public order” or have “lost morality.” Amongst rules that took effect Wednesday limit anyone under 18 to three hours per week of online games and prohibit play on school days. Thousands of accounts for fan clubs and entertainment news have been suspended.
One popular actress, Zhao Wei, has disappeared from streaming platforms without explanation, reports the AP. Her name has even been removed from credits of the movies and TV programs she appeared in.
